Abstract : Consider the fluid dynamic limit problem for the Broadwell system of the kinetic theory of gases, for Riemann, Maxwellian initial data. The formal limit is the Riemann problem for a pair of conservation laws and is invariant under dilations of coordinates. We are interested on the structure of shock solutions entailed by fluiddynamic limits. We review certain results on the existence of shock profiles for the Broadwell model and on the approach of selfsimilar fluid dynamic limits, and carry out comparisons between the two methods.
