Abstract : Several approaches for applying high resistance coatings continuously to HTS graphite yarn were investigated. Two of the most promising approaches involved (1) chemically vapor depositing (CVD) SiC coatings on the surface of the fiber followed by oxidation and (2) drawing the graphite yarn through an organo-silicone solution followed by heat treatments. In both methods, coated fibers were obtained with exhibited increased electrical resistances over untreated fibers and which were not degraded. The CVD SiC coated and oxidized graphite fibers were found to have high electrical resistances, but variation was measured from run to run. The pyrolyzed organo-silicone coated graphite fiber did not exhibit such a large increase in resistance and yielded lower shear strengths in composites, but the process for coating the fibers offered potential as a rapid coating technique. jg p6
