Abstract : A hazard which results from accidental release of graphite fibers from composite materials has been identified. The risk resulting from this hazard is being evaluated. In the meantime, NASA has initiated a program to explore alternate materials which eliminate the hazard or reduce the risk. On March 23 and 24, 1978, NASA Langley Research Center sponsored a Modified Composite Materials Workshop. This workshop was intended to display the NASA program on alternate materials and to solicit new ideas for other alternate materials. Working groups were organized to consider six topics: epoxy modifications, epoxy replacement, fiber modifications, fiber coatings and new fibers, hybrids, and fiber release testing. Because of the time required to develop a new material and acquire a design data base, most of the workers concluded that a modified composite material would require about four to five years of development and testing before it could be applied to aircraft structures. However, the Hybrid Working Group considered that some hybrid composites which reduce the risk of accidental fiber release might be put into service over the near term. The Fiber Release Testing Working Group recommended a coordinated effort to define a suitable laboratory test. That group did not have sufficient time to give careful consideration to the problems of large scale outdoor testing to prove the performance at full scale of proposed alternate materials. Most groups expressed a desire for further interaction with NASA in their technology areas in the future to monitor progress. (MM)
