Abstract : Studies of the influence of constituent properties upon the performance of structural composites for aerospace applications are described. Previous elastic constant and tensile strength evaluations are extended to broaden their range of applicability. An analysis of compressive strength is presented. These analyses are then used in a structural efficiency study of sandwich cylindrical shells subjected to axial load conditions appropriate to the launch vehicle problem. Promising areas for future development of composite materials are indicated. (AN)
