Abstract : Over the course of this contract, we have focussed our effort on two important areas of optoelectronics technology: high power/high performance VCSELs and integration of optoelectronics components onto siliconsubstrates by a new technique called fludic assembly. High multimode continuous-wave (cw) powers have been achieved from vertical-cavity surface emitting laser diodes (VCELs) without a heatsink. Fluidic self-assembly (FSA) developed as a new technique which makes possible the integration of devices fabricated using dissimilar materials and processes. A planar process has been developed that includes device isolation, bonding and contacting resulting in the first successful integration of VCELs onto Si by FSA.
