Abstract : Polybenzimidazole syntactic foam composites and polybenzimidazole-carbon cloth laminates have been produced for evaluation as ablative thermal protection systems for the proposed Space Shuttle vehicle and Planetary Probes,respectively. Processes were developed for producing these composites with consistent properties. The foam composites have densities of 0.4-5 gm/cm3, have low thermal conductivity, are non-flammable, non-smoking, have low weight loss to 600"C and retain their high mechanical properties to 350 deg C. These PBI foam composites could also find applications as thermal and fire barriers and as cryogenic ingulation. The PBI-carbon cloth laminates have a density of 1.4 gm/cm3 and posses haigh mechanical properties. Processes are described for producing billets and cylinders of the foamcomposites and laminates of the PBI-carbon cloth. Physical, chemical and thermal tests were performed to characterize these composite systems
