Abstract : This study addresses the different issues associated with materials substitution with fiber-reinforced composites in surface transportation vehicles, and identifies pertinent, 'high risk' R & D areas having payoff in the far term. Initially, a brief summary of the various materials and processes, and prototype development programs is presented. Subsequently, factors inhibiting the use of composites are listed and finally, future R & D areas are delineated. No attempt has been made to perform an exhaustive study and cover every aspect and activity in this technology area. This is due primarily to the limited scope of this effort and to the vastness of the field. (Author)
