Abstract : The surface of any component that undergoes mechanical loading is particularly important in influencing the fatigue life of that part. The factors that contribute to surface fatigue sensitivity are less slip restriction at the surface, the existence of single edge cracks, the surface sees large tensile gradients when the part is exposed to bending and torsion, the surface tends to be an area of multiple defects and the surface is the most sensitive region to environmental effects such as corrosion. Compressive residual stresses are utilized in the turbine engine environment to counteract regions on the surface that must withstand high tensile stresses.
