Abstract : This contract provided funding for a Symposium entitled 'Molecular Tribology' which was part of the American Chemical Society National Meeting held in Anaheim, California, April 4-6, 1995. Attendees, about 40 per session, came from many diverse disciplines - chemistry, physics, engineering, etc. - but all had a common interest in the molecular origins of tribology. Thirty four papers were presented on the following topics: (1) atomic-scale simulations of tribology phenomena; (2) UHV surface science, atomic force microscopy, and surface force apparatus studies of the molecular origins of tribology; (3) tribological issues faced by the space, automotive, magnetic recording, and micromechanics industries. Funding from the ONR grant was used to provide partial travel support for four of the twelve invited speakers. The program and abstracts are attached. jg p45
