Abstract : The International Congress of Toxicology-VII was held July 2-6, 1995, at the Washington State Convention Center, Seattle. The theme of the Congress was Horizons in Toxicology: Preparing for the 21st Century. There were nearly 2500 attendees from over 50 countries, including 1878 scientific registrants, 428 exhibitor registrants, 177 guests, and 8 media representatives. The scientific presentations of the Congress included the Deichmann lecture, Keynote lecture, 4 plenary lectures, 21 symposia, 13 workshops, 6 continuing education courses (4 offered twice) with 771 attendees, 2 debates, and 1331 abstracts for posters, poster discussions, and short oral communication presentations. The Congress proceedings appeared as a special issue of Toxicology Letters, Vol. 82/83 (1995), and also as a bound volume. The 994-page volume comprises 136 papers. The Congress was viewed as a success by all attendees. The presentations were of exceptional scientific quality and provided both a comprehensive review of current knowledge in toxicology and consideration of the prospects for the acquisition of new knowledge. The presentations reported on information obtained from studies at the molecular and cellular levels up to intact animals and, indeed, populations of laboratory animals and humans. Substantial emphasis was given to the application of toxicological information to the assessment of human health risks. The Congress received support from 50 industrial organizations, professional societies, and government agencies and involved thousands of hours of volunteer effort.
