Abstract : The results of a parametric study of a representative low-density charring ablator are presented and discussed. The results were obtained from an ablation analysis programed for solution on a high-speed digital computer. The thermal performance of the charring ablator was examined over a range of environmental conditions. The results show that the thermal performance of a charring ablator is strongly influenced by the environmental conditions, particularly stream enthalpy and oxygen concentration. The results also show that the effect of material properties on thermal performance depends upon the stream enthalpy level.
