Abstract : Surface and near surface acoustic backscatter measurements at 108, 72, 36, and 18 kHz made off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, have been analyzed and the results are presented in this report. The measurements were made with bottom mounted equipment looking upward at the ocean surface; wind speeds encountered varied from about 2.5 to about 16 m/s. Vertical incidence acoustic measurements were used to evaluate near surface volume backscatter versus depth, which were then used to estimate bubble density versus depth and bubble density versus bubble radius; these results were compared with other reported results. Measured surface backscattering strengths compare well with APL/UW model predictions at high grazing angles; however, measurement results were substantially below MINERAY and somewhat below APL/UW model predictions at intermediate and lower grazing angles when remotely measured wind speeds were used as model inputs.
