Abstract : Not all advanced materials are assessed in this report. The term 'advanced materials' can have as many different meanings as there are materials in the industry. This study is focused on load carrying structural materials that provide current or future technology advantage when applied to military structures. Consequently, this assessment divides advanced materials into two sectors which encompass two primary classes of structural materials: (1) Specialty Metals. Specialty metals encompass metals and metal alloys that have outstanding high temperature strength and oxidation resistance or enable extremely weight efficient structures at more moderate temperatures. Superalloys, titanium, and beryllium are assessed in this report. (2) Advanced Composites. Advanced composites are homogeneous matrix materials reinforced with either continuous fibers or particulates that are engineered to provide specific properties that facilitate extraordinary design capabilities. Polymer matrix composites (PMCs), ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), metal matrix composites (MMCs), and high thermal conductivity composites are assessed in this report. p5 & 6
