Abstract : A generally applicable method of obtaining kinetic parameters from temperature programmed thermogravimetry is presented. Factors influencing the selection of a particular method for the numerous treatments reported in the literature are discussed in detail. The method of Friedman involving the use of several thermograms at different heating rates and determining Arhennius parameters at each percent conversion was chosen. The experimental procedure and a method of handling thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data and calculations by computer are fully described. The application of the treatment to some specific polymer degradation systems is reported in order to illustrate the scope of the method and its potential usefulness in obtaining information concerning complex degradation mechanisms. Poly(tetrafluoroethylene), an aliphatic, and an aromatic polyamide were the polymers selected for this study.
