Abstract : Various analyses were performed to compare the results of two form assembly techniques in the development of the Interest-Finder. The technique used to create the actual Interest-Finder selected items so that the interest patterns on the Interest-Finder matched those of the Self-Directed Search. A comparison of items, scales, and forms was made between the actual Interest-Finder and a hypothetical instrument that was produced by eliminating the pattern-matching constraint. Results of the analyses showed that the original form assembly technique used by DMDC test developers produced a superior instrument. The hypothetical instrument exhibited some unacceptable gender differences and did not represent the original test taxonomy nearly as well as the actual Interest-Finder.
