Abstract : The growing revival of interest in Islam in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries is taking place at a time when the military and political elites of the region have set their nations on a course toward modernization. Some of the goals of Islamization and modernization are seen as incompatible by the proponents of each. This study specifically examines the impact of Islamic resurgence on the military security environment of the ASEAN states and the government/military response to that impact. The study was compiled from open source materials, and the information is current as of August 15, 1985.
