Abstract : The increasing global participation in Compassion International funding (both in total amounts and in number of contributing countries) presses us to evaluate whether its current international currency management system best serves Compassion's mission. Compassion deals with currencies from twenty-nine countries. In Fiscal Year 94-95, $49.4 million worth of funds were exposed to the fluctuations in foreign exchange rates. Compassion paid approximately $370,500 in transaction costs to exchange these funds. These fluctuations and costs make planning difficult and reduce the amount of funds which Compassion can spend on services for children. Given the constraints imposed by the international financial environment in which Compassion operates, the organization does a good job of managing its foreign exchange transactions. This project shows why Compassion is already doing well and how it could potentially do better.
