Abstract : An implementation of h-adaptivity was developed for DYNA2D, a nonlinear finite element program for two dimensional solids. In h-adaptivity, elements are subdivided into smaller elements when an error or refinement indicator exceeds a user specified threshold. Several error and refinement indicators are included, among them a local projection of the Green Lagrange strain tensor, the effective stress, and the effective plastic strain. The h-adaptive part of the program is totally separate from the DYNA2D program. Adaptivity is achieved through the use of the restart and rezone options in DYNA2D. The following problems were solved with the h-adaptive program: the Taylor rod impact problem, an elastic beam and elastic plastic beam. Comparisons were made with fine mesh solutions and show good agreement with substantial savings in computer time. Further improvements in the computational efficiency of the h-adaptive scheme could be achieved by adding subcycling in DYNA2D.
