Abstract : With the increased emphasis that is currently being placed upon strategic thinking, it is appropriate to reexamine past U.S. leaders to determine their proficiency in this skill. This study focuses on the strategic thinking of General Ulysses S. Grant as a military leader. Specifically addressed are his national strategic vision, his operational (battlefield) vision, and his personal leadership style. This study argues that Grant was 'state of the art' in each of these arenas. Diverse sources provide a view of his possession and mastery of the several layers of what we would dub strategy. The section on national strategic thinking furnishes a glimpse of his ability to see, well beyond most of his contemporaries, the connectivity between battlefield results and national destiny. The segment covering operational vision demonstrates Grant's key role in the advancement of operational art. The final portion, concentrating on his leadership style, displays a more personal view of Grant.
