Abstract : Terrestrial spectroscopy in the 3-5 micrometer wavelength region offers unique applications, such as detection of carbon and sulfur compounds, and temperature determination of ground fires and volcanic lava flows. We collected airborne hyperspectral images with a Fourier transform spectrometer over sea water in a tropical environment combined with radiosonde data and MODTRAN atmospheric modeling. We applied the results from these data to spectra collected of the same locations at different times without supporting radiosonde data, to assess surface radiance accuracy and atmospheric variability. This resulted in remotely sensed ground temperature accuracies averaging +/-5 Kelvin, comparable to space based AVHRR single channel accuracies.
