Abstract : Studies were conducted on the fabricability of Pyrrone systems by room-temperature isostatic and conventional compression molding techniques. The capability of the Pyrrones to be compression molded at elevated temperatures by dead-cure procedures (molding of fully cyclized polymer) was demonstrated and this fabrication method was emphasized. Correlations of conditions required to successfully mold Pyrrone pellets to various density and hardness values were developed. Molded Pyrrones were found to become quite brittle as their pellet densities increased. It was also shown that the molding procedure was complicated by an unfavorable thermal expansion relationship between the polymer and the mold. High-speed grinding techniques were demonstrated to be satisfactory for sectioning and facing molded Pyrrone panels.
