Abstract : Polymer films containing non-centrosymmetric crystals have been prepared and characterized by second harmonic generation. Combinations of water-soluble polymers and KDP or ADP produced good films. Efforts were made to extend this method to lead titanate, lead zirconate titanate and potassium titanyl phosphate. These materials were successfully produced as crystalline thin films via sol-gel chemistry with a high temperature annealing step. Composite films could be produced of these materials in amorphous form in polymers, but we did not yet succeed in crystallizing the inorganic material under hydrothermal conditions within the polymer. Bacterial threads, which have a highly phosphated cell wall, were also used as a support for the controlled growth of KDP powders and the resultant composites characterized by SHG.
