Abstract : This study discusses policies and laws governing Japan's defense industry and foreign military sales, including the three nonexport principles that were introduced in 1967 and were later extended to prohibit exports of arms factories as well as weaponry. Other topics analyzed included sales of military technology to the United States; prospects for the export of defense-related technology to China, the USSR, and Eastern Europe; and the structure and funding of government support to the defense industry, including government-sponsored military research and development.
