Abstract : The purpose of this project is to conduct cost-effectiveness analyses (CEA) of three treatment alternatives (modified radical mastectomy, breast conserving surgery with radiation therapy, and breast conserving surgery without radiation therapy) for elderly women (67 and older) with early stage breast cancer. Data for the CEA will be obtained from surveys of breast cancer patients at one, two, three, four, and five years post-treatment, their surgeons, and Medicare's National Claims History File. Two survey instruments were developed and tested during Year One: an in-person, baseline interview which will be administered approximately three months post-treatment and a physician survey instrument designed to measure physicians' treatment propensities, actual practice patterns, and various factors' importance in treatment decisions. The final instruments for use in national telephone and mail surveys will be derived from these instruments after preliminary analysis of data being collected by another research project.
