Abstract : This Critical Review and Technology Assessment Report presents the results of an assessment of the status of piezoelectric ceramic composites. Research on advanced piezoelectric materials has been driven by needs for various devices. The three primary application areas which have provided the research funding are: hydrophones for underwater sound detection; ultrasonic imaging; and sound and vibration absorbers. This report addresses issues such as basic principles and theory of ultrasonic transducer design, piezoceramic and other piezoelectric materials used for transducers, processing of piezoelectric ceramics, properties, applications and devices. Special attention is given to design and application of piezoelectric ceramics for military applications. New developments in thin films and fibers have also been reviewed and their application to new devices assessed.
