Abstract : We took a limited number of electric and magnetic field measurements near an electromagnetic (EM) armor experiment. The EM armor system forms a current channel that interferes with armor penetration between two electrified plates. We designed the field measurements to investigate the transient EM environment associated with the discharge of a capacitor bank through the electrified plates. We normalized the data to the measured peak current amplitude and the plate separation, and compared them to a model of the experimental configuration in terms of the source current elements. We considered an electrically small, transient source current filament over a perfect ground plane, where the EM field was calculated directly in the time domain. We estimated the effects of the plates on the EM field separately, based on the fringing field of a parallel plate capacitor in two dimensions. The combination of these simple models provides a useful engineering tool to predict the temporal and spatial variations of the EM environment associated with an EM armor system.
