Abstract : The pollution of soil and water with explosives and related compounds caused by military activities has been known for a long time. In this report the literature describing the abiotic and biotic transformation of 2,4,6- trinitrotoluene (TNT) and related compounds is reviewed. In recent years progress in understanding the environ- mental fate of such substances has been made from the many studies published in the past. Recent development using microbial processes that could be used for remediation of TNT-contaminated soils and waste waters look promising. Procedures are reviewed for qualitative screening and subsequent quantitation of residues of TNT employing HPLC including analytical holding times of samples, liquid-liquid and solid phase extraction and recovery. Finally the recent use of micellar electrokinetic capillary electrophoresis for the analysis of TNT and related compounds is discussed.
