Abstract : One class of compounds being considered as replacements for the presently used Halons are iodinated fluorocarbons. This report addresses some of the outstanding questions regarding the atmospheric chemistry of these proposed alternative compounds and their by-products from either intentional or accidental release. Very little information on the atmospheric chemistry of iodinated compounds is known, thus this work fills a timely and pressing need to answer questions, such as, what are the ozone depletion potential (ODP) and global warming potential (GWP) of such compounds?
