Abstract : Electrostatic hazards associated with handling RAAF M55 (AUST) 20 mm TP ammunition packaged in ammunition boxes using new plastic separator trays have been analysed. Moulded plastic trays have been introduced into the ammunition box to replace cardboard cylinders for individual rounds. Tests have been carried out to determine the electrostatic suitability of the tray when used with sensitive electrically initiated ammunition. The M52A3B1 conducting composition initiator used for the round has a no-fire threshold energy significantly below levels that tests show can be accumulated from electrostatic effects.
