Abstract : A combined experimental and numerical study has been carried out to examine the influence of thickness on the surface and through-thickness stress distributions of aluminum alloy specimens with central holes. Thermographic and strain-gauge measurements were made on several thicknesses of specimens, the central holes of which were either reamed or cold-expanded by 3.6%. The experimental results were compared with those from numerical analyses of the specimens by three-dimensional finite-element modelling.
