Abstract : To explore the effects of system failure (data error) and time limitations on problem-solving behavior and performance 12 experiments were conducted using two inferential reasoning tasks. In general system failure and time limitations lead to significant decrements in performance. In addition, a protocol analysis of problem-solving behavior revealed under both normal and system failure was indicative of a lack of development of metacognitive strategies for working under unreliable conditions. It was recommended that system training under degraded modes of operation should include some provisions for imposing time limits for the completion of certain tasks.
