Abstract : This report summarizes research conducted by the Dredging Research Program, Technical Area 1 Dredged Materials Disposed in Open Water.' Goals of Technical Area 1 were as follows: Analysis of (a) To establish a better understanding of boundary-layer properties of both cohesive and noncohesive materials and develop short- and long-term numerical approximation for determining the fate and disposition of dredged materials disposed in open water. (b) To develop field instrumentation to track suspended sediment plumes and monitor nearshore berms and disposal mounds for resuspension and migration of the dredged material. Fundamental knowledge on the boundary-layer flow properties of both cohesive and noncohesive materials was used to better formulate numerical expressions describing movement of these materials under wave and current conditions. The plume measurement system PLUMES was developed to track suspended-sediment plumes in open waters. The acoustic resuspension and measurement system ARMS was developed to determine resuspension from existing or proposed open-water disposal sites. Short- and long-term fate numerical models (STFATE and LTFATE) were developed for simulating placement of dredged materials at, resuspension of, and migration from open-water disposal sites. ADCIRC was formulated for generating long time periods of hydrodynamic circulation for very large computational domains, and generated databases of tidal constituents and tropical storms for U.S. coastlines. Instrumentation and techniques for monitoring nearshore berms and mounds placed as feeder beach nourishment material in the littoral zone were developed.
