Abstract : The performance of optical communications systems can be influenced by the mismatch between the low impedance laser source and the high impedance generator. A procedure is described here for matching a laser diode to a 50 ohm generator by means of a lossless equalizer network. The equalizer network is realized in the form of a microstrip adaptation of a ladder network consisting of inductor and capacitor equivalents. The mathematical model predicts 50-70% improvement in transducer power gain. Experimental results confirm this.
