Abstract : In previous work we developed a model to predict the resistance (Rt) of ceramic targets to long rod penetration. The model was based on the cavity expansion model of Bishop, Hill, and Mott. Here we use computer simulations with the CTH code to validate our Rt model. We show that our model reproduces quite well the increase of Rt with the strength-pressure parameter, and with the cap pressure in the strength model. The increase of Rt with impact velocity predicted by the model is somewhat higher than that obtained from the simulations. We propose an explanation for this discrepancy that needs to be verified.
