Abstract : A literature search for studies on the subject of large companies and other large organizations that fail competitively after their staffs were downsized, frozen or otherwise incapacitated. A comparison between commercial and government organizations was made to determine applicability of information derived from the commercial sector. A model of a 'typical' technical organization is presented and impacts of various downsizing methodologies are discussed. Companies that downsized only slightly, or not at all, significantly outperformed companies that significantly downsized.
