Abstract : The objective of this project was to investigate new materials and shapes available for use as gaskets in sealed containers. The properties of the new materials had to be evaluated/tested to assure they met or exceeded the properties of current gasket materials. The project also looked at the manufacturing processes of extruding vs. molding. We also investigated the joint bonding process of using chemical adhesive as well as vulcanizing and heat welding. Another aspect of the project was to evaluate the required cross sectional area and hence the compression required to create a sealed container repeatedly with the minimum amount of force.
