Abstract : The two major findings from this work were the contribution of scaled boundary linking in shape and size perception and the existence of statistical representations for sets of objects. Linking boundaries of simple spatial regions at a spatial resolution proportional to the region's width yields the scaling of size judgment with size and provides a scale-invariant representation of simple object shape. This approach to image analysis has been adopted for the analysis of medical images. The idea that the visual system creates a statistical representation arose from findings that observers represent the mean value in a set with high precision but retain almost no information about the individual items in the set.
