Abstract : The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Advanced Turbine Aerothermal Research Rig (ATARR) is a short-duration, turbine stage testing facility. The ATARR facility is designed for a nominal 2-second run time. This long run time created the requirement for fast-acting shut-off valves to avoid over-heating the eddy brake system and other potential emergency situations. In addition, the ATARR facility will be used to test a wide variety of turbines, necessitating frequent modification to the main test section. Finally, one of the main applications of the ATARR facility will be aero-performance measurements.
