Abstract : This report describes a prototype weather forecasting expert system called Itasca that provides a short term (0 - 12 hour) weather forecast for a midlatitude station when only limited data are available. If data are available only at the forecast station, single station forecasting techniques are utilized. If more stations are available, their data are used to improve the forecast. The expert system simulates the process used by experienced human forecasters by first constructing a meteorological analysis and then, from this analysis, making a forecast. The system's user interface consists of pull down menus in a windowed environment. The system presents data graphically as much as possible.
