Abstract : This report describes the climatological features, local controls, and some of the synoptic systems that exist in the Tropics. These meteorological details are part of the development of a single station expert forecasting system for the Tropics. An extensive literature search accomplished in the past year is reviewed. A new model for forecasting tropical disturbances, considering them to be composed of an upper cold low or trough and a surface wave like disturbance, is proposed. Areas to cover next year are given. The Appendix gives tropical weather characteristics that are of interest to the single station forecaster.
