Abstract : Recently the Rmatrix propagation algorithm has been used in conjunction with a kspace modalexpansion to calculate diffraction from gratings. The Rmatrix eliminates numerical instability associated with deep gratings. We introduce here a realspace version of the modalexpansion method. A detailed numerical study of the convergence versus number of diffracted orders is given. For wavelength lambda, we consider sinusoidal gratings having height h = 1.7lambda and 17lambda where both have period d = l.7lambda. We consider absorbing metallic and nonabsorbing dielectric gratings. Results are compared with those of other authors and with our previous results.
