Abstract : Artificial soil was spiked with HD at a concentration of 3.3381 g HD/500 g soil. The HD used was a mixture of 14C radiolabeled HD (0.0381 g) and aged HD (3.3 g), which had been recovered from a munition in an excavation site (Spring Valley, Washington, DC). The HD was hydrolyzed to below 200 ppb using a hot water slurry. The cooled slurry was spiked with activated sludge, and the biological fate of the 14C radiolabeled products (14Cco2 evolution versus biomass and soluble products remaining in the slurry) was followed by scintillation counting.
