Abstract : Over the past 20 years, more and more aircraft performance testing is being dedicated to the validation of aerodynamic and propulsion system models for use in performance prediction routines. Since it has always been impractical to test an aircraft at every flight condition, mathematical aircraft models have served as tools which allowed us to "extrapolate" beyond the actual test points in the production of flight manuals and other performance documentation. The development of better aircraft models not only provides more confidence in the extrapolation of test data, but reduces the amount of performance flight testing actually required. The purpose of this course is to provide an understanding of the role of aerodynamic models in aircraft performance predictions and to introduce the stabilized, quasi-steady-state, and dynamic flight test methods for building these models.
