Abstract : This report describes the first phase of an investigation of the effect of shape and material on the thermal rupture of ceramics. It deals primarily with thermal rupture caused by steady- state radial heat flow through a circular tube. One objective of this research is to ascertain under what conditions the heat flow per unit length causing failure, Qmax, can be written as the product of two factors: M, characterizing the material, and S, characterizing the shape of the specimen.
