Abstract : In estimating the lifetime distribution of a product, the following periodic inspection plan is put forward. Select a random sample of n units of the product and set them to work. Choose an integer m > or = 1, numbers 0<t1<t2<...<tm, and inspect the units at times t1, t2,...,tm. The data consist of number of units that fail between every two consecutive inspection times. The choice of m and numbers t1,t2,...,tm are discussed in this paper. Some graphical methods are presented to identify the parametric model of the underlying lifetime distribution based on the interval-censored data gathered. A new method of estimating the parameters of the lifetime distribution based on Linear Model Theory is presented and compared with the method of maximum likelihood.
