Abstract : The report describes workload measurements in the ship control centre of the N frigate during exercises under simulated war conditions. The measurements were part of a large human-engineering evaluation of the ship control centre, in which, outside the exercises, also the opinions of the crew of the ship control centre were gauged. The results of the interviews are described in reports of the Royal Netherlands Navy. Used for the measurement of workload were 'workload watches', wrist-mounted apparatus designed for measuring on the job. The watches delivered signals every five minutes whereupon the wearer indicated the amount of workload experienced at the moment. Times of signal delivery and key-press response were recorded automatically for later analysis. The workload watches lived up to expectations; the crew was indeed able to report on the job the experiences of workload and without disturbing their task. Results were as follows. The average workload was 'normal', but occasionally periods of (too) high workload were reported.
