Abstract : A suppression of the creep rate in 99.99 per cent pure aluminum wire due to the effects of irradiation by a 38-Mev alpha particle beam has been found. A comparison was made in 27 cases, of the creep rate with beam to the creep rate without beam for the same specimen at neighboring time intervals and at the same temperature. In each case there was a suppression of the creep rate which amounted to a factor of two in some instances, or as much as a factor of eight, depending on the evaluation of experimental errors. Evidence is given to show that this effect is probably not due to temperature changes.
