Abstract : The design of high current plasma devices such as arcjet thrusters, arc heaters, magnetohydrodynamic generators, and plasma opening switches has in the past been based mostly on empirical methods. In the case of arcjet thrusters, these methodologies have produced a steady, reliable device when operated at low power levels. However, it is desirable to increase the performance and operating range of the arcjet so that they may run more efficiently and reliably and be applicable to a wider set of missions.
