Abstract : The overall objective of this project is to improve the detection and treatment of breast cancer by evaluating vasopressin gene-related products as tumor marker substances in hyperplastic breast disease, by characterizing the nature and regulation of the vasopressin gene and its products in breast cancer, and by determining the potential usefulness of vasopressin gene-related products on tumor membranes as targets for immunotherapy. It seeks to test the hypothesis that all breast tumors produce vasopressin as an autocrine growth factor, in situ, and that this property can be effectively utilized not only to elucidate the pathobiology of this cancer, but also to identify precancerous tissue and develop more successful treatments.
