Abstract : A North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Advanced Studies Institute (ASI) on Defense Conversion Strategies was held at the Atholl Palace Hotel, Pitlochry, Perthshire, Scotland; from July 2 through July 14, 1995. The specific aim of the ASI was to identify and study the elements of successful defense conversion strategies through a systematic analysis of the factors influencing them and the common features of specific national efforts. It was to be a combination of theory and practical experience which would explore specific international strategies. The recommendations of the ASI address current approaches to defense conversion in the United States and other NATO countries, the conversion process in Russia and other former Soviet Union republics, and the establishment of a special international committee to deal with the problems of conversion.
